WHO WE ARE
Colégio Farroupilha is located in Porto Alegre and it was the first school in Rio Grande do Sul to become a Cambridge Assessment English Open Centre since 2012. This authorization allows the institution to apply Cambridge English Qualifications to its students and outside candidates and also to help with the development of preparations centres, application sites and Cambridge English Qualification in other cities throughout the state.
Colégio Farroupilha is one of the most traditional basic education institutions in Rio Grande do Sul. It was founded in 1886 by Associação Beneficente e Educacional of 1858 – ABE 1858 (originally called German Beneficent Association), an entity created to help German immigrants and their descendants who were arriving in south of Brazil. Colégio Farroupilha assists students from Nursery to High School by having as its mission to educate to form competent, ethical, and global citizens, giving them conditions to develop their own abilities. The school is a leading reference regarding English learning by incorporating, in 2010, preparations to Cambridge English Qualification in the school curriculum.
The importance of integration of Cambridge’s qualification in Colégio Farroupilha’s curriculum
Since 2010, Colégio Farroupilha is an international reference for being the first school in the world to incorporate the qualification and preparation to Cambridge English Assessment exams on its school curriculum. The development of abilities and competencies being measured in Cambridge exams are present in the school curriculum from preschool education. However, the application of the exams begins in elementary school and it can result in students reaching the highest level of proficiency – C2 of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages – CEFR – by high school.
For the last 10 years, teaching and learning in Colégio Farroupilha are aligned with CEFR that describes, in a comprehensive way, which competencies and abilities the students need to develop in order to effectively use the language in communicative situations. The supply of objective criterias to describe proficiency on the language facilitate mutual recognition in acquired qualification in different learning contexts.
The framework also defines the level of proficiency that allows progress measurement of students in every learning stage through a lifelong perspective and facilitate that groups of Colégio Farroupilha’s students are organized by age and level of mastery in the language. The proficiency levels in Colégio Farroupilha are determined by previous reached levels by students in Cambridge English Language Assessment exams.
